EdgeRouter POE: Power 48V POE switches

By | May 25, 2016

I got my EdgeRouter POE from UbiQuiti EdgeRouter, 5-port Router POE
and came with the 24VAC power supply. Because the Ubiquity devices are all using the strange low power POE for which 24VAC is enough they ship the EdgeRouter POE with the 24VAC power supply. As a result the device is useless in powering “normal” industry accepted POE devices.

I had to buy an extra 48VAC power supply. I do not think amazon.de or fr has any vendor that supplies it with a 48VAC power source. Lucky for us the EdgeRouter is not using strange connectors and supports in fact a 48VAC source. I found at the good price the following:

48VAC

As you see it is a china generic power supply with the code GS60A48-P1J and the specifications:
INPUT : 100-240 VAC 50/60Hz, 1.4A
OUTPUT : 48V 1.25A 60W maximum

This is conform with the POE standard of majority of the devices. There is also a 120W rated model but this 60W model is enough for me to power my two HPE PS1810 switches that have a maximum power rating of 7.2W each. This is in the end my EdgeRouter POE powering the two switches.

Note the last two ports with the left top light indicating that POE supply for that port is on.
Do not forget to activate POE on the needed ports from the EdgeRouter GUI, without software activation they do not supply power.
With the 48VAC power supply you will have the following selections for each port POE: off/24VAC/48VAC so make sure you select the right rating.
